As an integral part of flat roof repair homeowners always split into two choices that are single ply membrane and spray foam roofing. Now, the question is which one is the better one and which one is the affordable one.
The Basics
Single-Ply Membrane Roofing
The single ply membrane are rubber sheets and these can be installed and chemically adhered to the roof and creates a protection layer to the building.
Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Roofing
The spray foam roofing often mentioned as SPF and this is sprayed over the roof and expands.
INSTALLATION
Single-Ply Membrane Roofing
The installation process starts with TPO and EPDM single ply membrane roofing system. Once the substrate is ready the existing roof is cleaned up for insulation installation. There are a few installation types available including Polyisocyanurate (Polyiso), Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Extruded Polystyrene (XPS).
Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Roofing
After starting the installation process, the existing roof gets ready. The present roof is not torn out but the contractor cleans it up and removes dirt, contaminants and more. The first layer is polyurethane foam. This foam is a combination of two liquids and they are spread over the existing roof. Once that is sprayed it turns to a solid surface.
ADVANTAGES
Single-Ply Membrane Roofing
The EPDM roof is used for commercial roofing for almost 60 years. This is a great time for studying roof performance and monitor how frequent this flat roof needs repair.
This roofing system does not involve insulation factor and a customer has wide options to choose from regarding insulation.
The EPDM roofing system has fire resistance rating as it has fire proof chemicals added at the manufacturing process.
The TPO roof is reflective and white. EPDM roof is considered as black roof because of the membrane’s natural color.
Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Roofing
The spray foam roofing is energy efficient and works as a barrier for air and moisture intrusion and gives the R-value.
- The foam material contracts and expands and it reduces possibilities of splitting and cracks.
- The solid surface does not need seams or joints and stays away from leaking.
- This is environment friendly and does not make waste and tear-offs.
